Wood is good. It is the most environmentally-friendly construction material available and the only sustainable building material.

Not only will your new timberframe home be a number of rungs up the property ladder when it comes to being 'green', but with RTK you'll be dealing with a company that has gone even further in its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint by attaining the ISO 14001 standard.

So let's begin with the green credentials and benefits that timberframe homes can offer you.

For a start, by their very nature they use far more wood, which is a natural, sustainable and eco-friendly material. Because it is a whole-life material it is effectively carbon-neutral.

Less energy is needed to produce timberkit than traditional brick or stone homes, preventing around four tonnes of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere per home - roughly equivalent to a car driving half way round the world.

In terms of comparable material strength, wood uses five times less energy to produce a useable end product than concrete and six times less than steel.

So wood is good for the environment and because the European construction industry uses almost entirely renewable softwood, it does not result in the destruction of ancient or tropical forests. In fact, under current European agreements, more forest acreage is planted than used, adding around 3500 square miles - roughly the size of Cyprus - of new forest to Europe each year.

Timber's natural insulation qualities are an added green benefit in terms of reduced energy use within your new home. Robertson Timberkit homes are currently around a quarter more energy efficient than current building standards demand - saving on your fuel bills and emissions from daily energy use.

At Robertson Timberkit, we have always believed that we must help protect the planet for future generations and only use wood from sustainable sources. Robertson Timberkit also looks to minimise waste, actively seeks out recycling opportunities and continually invests in our manufacturing processes to keep us at the leading-edge of environmental consideration.  Click here to view Robertson Timberkit's Environmental Policy.

We are well aware that construction has an environmental impact. So Robertson Timberkit put itself up for external examination in our drive to make our business even more environmentally sustainable and has achieved ISO 14001, a cornerstone green standard.

Remember - with a Robertson Timberkit , a new home doesn't cost the Earth.
